Jasper Coolidge

Show review at Sine

Though she came only all the way over from the wilds of Jersey City to play our show, Julia Vorontsova, with her riveting Russian language songs and from a purer time and place stage presence, sounded as if she traveled all the way from her native St. Petersburg and certainly took those in the audience who had braved the Siberia-like blizzard outside on a journey to one of the greatest destinations of all, that of music that we've always been in love with, but just hadn't known it existed. One of my most ardent beliefs when it comes to music is that girls with a guitar and a story to tell are as abundant in this country as wheat and squirrels. Those that have been successful at it lately (Liz, Jewel, Sheryl, Cat, Neko, Haley to name a few) have had some sort of combination of traffic-stopping looks, quirky charm, or arresting personalities.

Well, in Julia, we are fortunate to be bearing witness to a performer who has all three in spades. Telling stories in the most adorable no-so-broken English and painting accompanying pictures and fleshing them out in song, she is easily one of the most charming singer/songwriters I've seen, and will most certainly be carding out a niche for herself in a genre where that seems to be one big niche.
